Over a thousand people lined the streets of Corporal David O’Connor’s hometown of Havant, Hampshire, ahead of the funeral with full military honours.

An entire town shut down yesterday so mourners could pay tribute to a heroic Royal Marine killed in Afghanistan.
Over a thousand people lined the streets of Corporal David O’Connor’s hometown of Havant, Hampshire, ahead of the funeral with full military honours.
Shops closed and customers emptied onto the pavements where they stood up to eight-deep to applaud the cortege as it passed.
They joined Cpl O’Connor’s mother Rosemary, father Roy, brother Phil, and grandfather George, to grieve the 27-year-old.

Cpl O’Connor, of 40 Commando, died after being attacked on patrol in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, last month.
The sombre procession passed through a pedestrianised area - not open to traffic since 1982 - as it moved towards a packed St Faith’s Church.

An emotional service, including hymns such as the Lord is My Shepherd, was broadcast to crowds outside. Children sat on their parents’ shoulder to give them a better view of the hearse.
Colleagues described a ‘brave, committed and humorous’ Marine who had served four tours of duty in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Matt Jackson said the Royal Marines had lost an ‘exceptional’ man.
LC Jackson added: ‘Cpl Dave O’Connor was one of the best.

‘He was loved and respected by those around him and was relentless in the pursuit of excellence in his duties. He was utterly professional.
‘The lives of the Royal Marines that he leaves behind will always be marred by the sadness of losing a great leader, a great companion and a great friend.’
Sandy Hopkins, chief executive of Havant Borough Council, said: ‘It is an extremely sad day for the friends and family of Corporal David O’Connor and all that knew him.

‘The town is extremely proud of the sacrifice he made fighting for his country. As a council, we did not hesitate in putting procession plans in place so we could all come together and pay tribute to a brave soldier.
‘This is the first time we have closed the town centre for over 40 years. Our decision was met with universal support from shopkeepers and residents and is a measure of the town’s strength of our support for our troops.’
Three shots were fired into the sky after the ceremony, led by Reverend Canon Peter Jones, of St Faith’s, and forces chaplain Scott Shackleton.
A police escort then accompanied the family onto Chichester Crematorium for a private committal.
